Canada Debt Help Starts Here…
It all started around September or October of last year, 2008.
My credit card company, MBNA Bank of Canada, found my new phone number and started phoning me about my late payments…or rather, absence of payments.
I had put so much on my card, which had a $5,000 limit, that I figured it would be painful to try to pay it off with $200/month payments. Essentially, I was discouraged from making payments, which caused me to made small payments, and eventually I just didn’t make any payments at all.
Now, they were calling me, annoyed. And rightfully so: I’d borrowed money from them, and wasn’t paying them back according to the timetable I agreed to.
I Didn’t Know What To Do…I Didn’t Know What My Options Were
Probably like you, this was my first time having debt problems. As a first timer, you can probably relate to the fact that there’s a very good chance that you DON’T know what all your rights as a consumer and what your options are. This is big, because as you’ll discover, credit agencies like to prey on our lack of knowlege about our rights and options. They know that this is very likely your first time being faced with this significant of a debt problem, and may make it seem like you only have a couple of options.
For example, you may think you have only 2 options, whereas there are actually 5…at least. I bet that at this point, nobody ever told you what those 5 options were…did they?
In any case, back to my story. So it was September or October, and MBNA kept phoning me, and quite frankly, I was having trouble making my minimum payments. I was on the internet one day searching for a possible solution. (I had mentioned to MBNA that I’d look for ways to resolve this issue. They sort of asked me if I’d do credit counselling, to which I said “I’m not sure.” )
As a side note, you mostly want to avoid credit counselling…at least until you speak to someone about all of your options.
Anyway, I came across something called debt settlement, primarily a company called Canada Debt Settlements. I think it was my curiosity (“What is debt settlement?”) that got me to inquire further, and actually phone them.
And am I glad I did. I’m glad I know what my options ae, and particularlly about the debt settlement program that these guys offer.
Aaron, who’s one of the founders of Canada Debt Settlements has been very informative and helpful with me. He’s really helped me not only understand all of my options, but also, really understand the entire debt situation from a business perspective…
…Which sort of ties into what I’m doing right now. What started out as a personal problem has now become a professional partnership: I’ve been so impressed with the debt program that CDS offers, that as of January 2009, we’ve started a business affiliation together. This is great, becuse I can use my internet marketing skill to spread the message about debt settlement and inform more Canadians about this little-known, newer option that’s available to them.
Over the next week or so, I’ll be posting a series of articles that explore various subjects within the debt help area. The links you see on the right sidebar are to government and non-government sources you’ll find helpful, particularly the Canadian Consumer Handbook offered by the Canadian Office of Consumer Affairs. The sidebar on the right will also feature a link to every article I post on this site, so feel free to look at the article titles on the right, and click the one that appeals most to you and your situation.
If you’d like to speak to someone now, I’d like to recommend a free, no-pressure consultation you can get from Canada Debt Settlements, at: 1-877-475-3939.
Don’t worry if you don’t know what debt settlement is; Aaron and company can tell you what they think is the best option for your financial situation, and they can explain it to you in great detail. (It’s actually not too hard to grasp.)
